AUTOCAD 1 – Introductory 2D

This course will introduce the student to basic and intermediate concepts related to 2D rendering using CAD, including creating a new drawing, moving around an existing drawing, basic creation and editing commands dimensioning, annotation, viewpoints, layouts and plotting.

Prerequisite:

  • Local 27 member in good standing
  • Computer (Basics), Blueprint Reading 1

Course Length: 60 hours (10 Saturdays or 20 evening classes)

BASICS OF SUPERVISING

This course is to prepare supervisors for competency within the construction industry.  Intended for crew level construction supervisors, the goal of this course is to increase supervisory skills and to make the student aware of the supervisors’ responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

BLUEPRINT READING BASIC

This course covers the basics of blueprint reading. There will be a review of drawing techniques (e.g., isometric, orthographic drafting), the associated alphabet of lines and symbols, and scaling.  Different views associated with drawings (e.g., section, plan, and elevation) and their applications will also be examined.

BLUEPRINT READING ADVANCED

Students will be taught to read commercial blueprints.  The topics covered will include: structural, architectural, engineered drawings, and specifications.  Some basic layout and estimating principles will be developed around this knowledge.

  • Blueprint Reading Basic course or equivalent knowledge

CARPENTER’S DISTRICT COUNCIL OF ONTARIO/ISHA TUBE & CLAMP AND SYSTEM SCAFFOLDING HEALTH SAFETY TRAINING PROGRAM

This course focuses on safe procedures and erection methods for tube and clamp and system scaffolds in the Ontario Construction Industry

Prerequisites:

  • Local 27 member in good standing
  • Valid Fall Protection card.

CERTIFICATE OF QUALIFICATION EXAM PREPARATION

This course consists of a comprehensive review of all of the areas of carpentry associated with the provincial and inter-provincial Red Seal C of Q examination.  In addition, students will be coached in:

  • Time management techniques;
  • Developing effective study habits; and
  • Strategies for writing multiple-choice exams.

Prerequisites:

  • Local 27 member in good standing
  • Student must meet Ministry guidelines regarding the completion of general carpenter apprenticeship schooling (i.e., Basic, Intermediate, & Advanced) and/or the minimum required work experience hours

Course Length: 42 hours (14 evening classes)

CHAINSAW SAFETY

Upon completion, participants will have a working knowledge of the requirements, guidelines, and procedures to operate and maintain chainsaws safely.

Topics include: Operating hazards, safety features, maintenance requirements, chain and bar features, personal protective equipment, fueling and starting procedures and handling and cutting techniques.

A wallet card will be provided to successful participants.

COMPUTER (BASIC)

Students will be taught the basics of personal computers.  They will develop an understanding of computer hardware and the use of associated software including: Windows, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.

CONCRETE FORMWORK

Students receive instruction on how to fabricate, assemble, and set concrete forms for Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional construction.

CONFINED SPACES

The Confined Spaces course reviews the Occupational Health & Safety Act requirements with respect to working in confined spaces; hazard awareness, procedures for working in confined spaces; and emergency response.

CONSTRUCTION MATH

This course is designed to help carpenters develop their skills with respect to the mathematics commonly used in the construction field.  Group classroom instruction will be utilized; however, individuals will be encouraged to progress at their own pace.

CORIAN SOLID SURFACE

This is a recognized “Du Pont installers” course. Students will be instructed in installation and repair techniques for Corian solid surface products. Students will be required to demonstrate these techniques through the installation of a Corian countertop and will be assessed on their understanding of the technical information associated with the product.  Upon successful completion, students will be certified installers of Corian solid surface products.

Prerequisites:

  • Local 27 member in good standing
  • Journey-worker status
  • Good tool craft as it relates to routers and templating
  • Ability to scribe and work to close tolerances

Course Length: 12 hours (weekend classes)

Scriber, block plane, framing square, cabinet scrapers, measuring tape, 1 ½” chisel, hammer, safety glasses & footwear, notebook, pen

DOOR & HARDWARE – BASIC (Pre-Assessment)

Students will receive instruction on door and hardware basics, including door and hardware schedules, frame installations, door installation, door closers and locks.  Students must successfully install a door, a door closer and pass a written test to take the Electrified or Mechanical Door and Hardware

DOOR & HARDWARE (MECHANICAL)

This program covers door and lock installation; door closers; panic hardware; reading and interpreting door schedules.

DOOR & HARDWARE (ELECTRIFIED)

Students are taught to read and interpret electrical schematics for door access and to install electrified hardware.

ELECTRONIC DOOR & HARDWARE - ADVANCED

This course provides clear, concise, step-by-step instructions in the installation of many different brands and types of doors and door hardware and electrified door hardware.  The seven primary areas to be covered include: frames; doors; hinges; bored locksets; mortise locks; exit devices and closers.  This course meets the manufacturers’ warranty requirements regarding the installation of their respective product.  A certified installer card will be issued upon successful completion of the course.

ELEVATED WORK PLATFORMS: ZOOM BOOM & SCISSOR LIFT

This course addresses: the Occupational Health & safety Act as it relates to aerial platforms; basic information about how the equipment functions; proper maintenance and inspection procedures; and safe operating practices.

  • Local 27 member in good standing
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Valid Fall Protection Card

Course Length: 16 hours (evening and weekend classes)

ESTIMATING

Students will receive instruction in estimating construction projects of a primarily residential nature.  Students will devise a materials estimate for a specific house in accordance with a given set of blueprints. They will identify and organize distinct components of the house building process and estimate the appropriate materials.

Prerequisites:

  • Local 27 member in good standing
  • Ability to read basic blueprints
  • Basic math skills
  • (Completion of Phase I general carpenter schooling is recommended)

Course Length: 30 hours (10 evening classes)

FALL PROTECTION

This safety program addresses legislation relating to fall protection; fall hazard awareness; safe use of ladders and scaffold; inspection of fall protection equipment; and proper use of fall protection equipment.  Upon successful completion, students will be accredited with the CSAO certificate for Fall Protection.

 Prerequisites:

  • Local 27 member in good standing

FIRST AID (TORONTO EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES)

Students will learn to administer First Aid and adult CPR in accordance with Toronto EMS requirements.  A certificate will be issued upon successful completion.

FORKLIFT – SLAB

This course addresses: the Occupational Health & safety Act as it relates to slab forklifts; basic information about how the equipment functions; proper maintenance and inspection procedures; and safe operating practices.

FORKLIFT – ALL-TERRAIN

This course addresses: the Occupational Health & safety Act as it relates to all-terrain forklifts; basic information about how the equipment functions; proper maintenance and inspection procedures; and safe operating practices.

  • Valid Driver’s License

Course Length: 14 hours (evening/weekend classes)

HYDRO MOBILE MAST CLIMBER

This course involves the operation, erection and dismantling of a mast climber scaffold.  The student will learn how to become a competent operator of a Hydro Mobile Mast Climber.  This course is approximately 50% in class theory with the other 50% on the unit itself learning to operate and service the unit, as well as installing it on the job

  • Valid Fall Protection card

INTERIOR TRIM -  BASIC

Students will learn to create and apply simple and complex trim (including build-outs) and geometrical design as it relates to built up trim applications.  Students are also taught the safe use of power tools.

Projects include: pilaster boxes, wainscoting, crown moulding, vaulted and elliptical arches over doors and windows.

Prerequisites:

  • Local 27 member in good standing
  • Completion of Phase 1 General Carpenter schooling is recommended.

Course Length: 69 hours (evening & weekend classes)

INTERIOR TRIM  - ADVANCED

Students are introduced to advanced jig building and CNC machine operation and they are taught to construct and install coffered ceilings and radius moldings.

  • Successful completion of Interior Trim Basic

Course Length: 69 hours (evening & weekend classes)

LAYOUT 1 (BUILDER’S & LASER LEVEL)

Students will receive instruction in all aspects of the builder’s level including: set up, leveling, elevations, topographical surveying, and logbook entry.  This will serve as a prerequisite for the Layout 2 course.

  • Math proficiency

Course Length: 27 hours (weekend & evening classes)

LAYOUT 2 (TRANSIT & CALCULATIONS)

Students will be exposed to all aspects of site surveying and layout using the Transit.  Emphasis will be placed on math calculations and print reading as they relate to layout.  This will serve as a pre-requisite for the Total Station course.

Prerequisites:

  • Local 27 member in good standing
  • Completion of Layout 1 or equivalent experience
  • Advanced Blueprint Reading course or equivalent skill level
  • Math proficiency

Course Length: 36 hours (weekend & evening classes)

Measuring tape, safety glasses & footwear, notebook, pen, calculator

LAYOUT 3 (TOTAL STATION)

Students will learn to set up a Total Station instrument and to locate and layout known features from a grid system using the 4 Sokkia Powersets 3010 3" or 4010 5" Total Stations.  Upon successful completion students will be able to:

  • Set up and calibrate a Total Station instrument
  • Understand “accuracy theory”
  • Establish horizontal distances and angles
  • Establish and reference ‘base lines’
  • Establish grid points and features from a blue print from known points

Prerequisites:

  • Local 27 member in good standing
  • Completion of Layout 2 or equivalent experience
  • Advanced Blueprint Reading course or equivalent skill level
  • Ability to use a standard transit
  • (Layout experience is an asset)

Course Length: 12 hours (Weekend)

* Note:

This course is intended as a starting point for the use of Total Station. Additional modules to expand on the capabilities of the instrument may be pursued in the future. However, these modules will likely be provided by the manufacturers of the respective Total Station instruments.

PROPANE TRAINING - ISHA

Students will be taught to hook up and operate the propane-fueled devices found in construction in accordance with the on-site Ministry of Labour requirements for propane use.  A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.

Prerequisite:

  • Local 27 member in good standing

Course Length: 4 hours (weekend classes)

STAIR BUILDING -  BASIC

Students will receive instruction pertaining to the relevant codes, calculations and construction of straight flight stairs in concrete and wood and the installation of required balustrade.

  • Local 27 member in good standing
  • Completion of Basic general carpenter schooling or equivalent

Course Length: 60 hours (weekend & evening classes)

STAIR BUILDING - ADVANCED

Students will receive instruction on the relevant codes, calculations; layout and construction techniques involved in constructing wooden “winder” stairs.

Prerequisites:

  • Local 27 member in good standing
  • Completion of Stair Building Basic course or advanced general carpenter schooling.

Course Length: 60 hours (weekend & evening classes)

WELDING CWB

This course will begin with introductory procedures and techniques required to safely cut and weld using gas and arc welding.  Students will then proceed to learn welding techniques as they relate to the four Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) positions (i.e. flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead).  Students may be eligible to challenge a CWB test at the end of the course, depending on the level of proficiency they have attained. .

Course Length: 42 hours (14 evening classes)

WHMIS CERTIFICATION

 

Students will be instructed in the requirements associated with Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems.  A WHMIS card will be issued upon successful completion.
